Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.
“You’re pregnant.”
“It’s a boy.”
“Your son needs a heart transplant.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.
Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.
“He’s gone.”
For ten years, the darkness consumed me.
In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

I have never been more crushed, elated, or emotionally distraught while reading a book until this one. Aly Martinez, you are a wicked devil, and I bow down to the amazing world and epically real characters you created in this story.

I can’t say too much about the plot of this book, because I feel like anything could give something away, and there are A LOT of somethings to give away. Like WHOA. This book hurt me and saved me. Made me feel sad, angry, happy and blissful.

Porter and Charlotte are scarred. In beyond imaginable ways, these two human beings have been put through an onslaught of the impossible. But they’re still breathing. Barely. Charlotte holds on for the something that may never, or could never happen. But she waits, because that one thing is her whole world. Porter holds on the two children that need him. They go through the motions. But both of their emotional dams break, which is overdue for them both, when they’re faced with the cold and yet familiar reality they seen in each other’s eyes. That familiarity of being in the dark, wanting to stay there, and being suspended in the prison of your own mind.

But that familiarity that broke through their defenses could break them even worse than they were before. Porter and Charlotte, and their whole entire world for that matter, could have never been ready for the heart-racing moments that follow after they meet. Moments of pure unadulterated lust, moments of not being able to move on, moments that unite and destroy families at the same time. While what I thought I knew with this book, did end up being somewhat accurate, I could have never anticipated the ledge it would leave me on. The precipice of good and bad, right and wrong. I am torn, and I don’t see a way out, but if Charlotte and Porter could take their broken pieces and make them as whole as possible for even a few stolen moments, there has to be a happy ending for them. They’re too right together. Physically and emotionally. But fate has not finished with its wicked little game it set in motion all those years ago.

You cannot miss this book. I’m ashamed it took me this long to read it, but once I sat down, I rarely moved a muscle until I inhaled the entire duet. An emotionally gripping read, that tells a story of shattered hearts you will fall in love with and root for in every success and failure they have. The Darkest Sunrise is that book that will leave your world spinning. But trust me, it’s worth it.

Happy Reading!

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
