This is going to be short, sweet and to the point. Did I love this book? Absolutely. Was it my normal kind of read? Not so much. Pepper Winters has once again proved to me that she has the power to take me out of my comfort zone, into a book that isn't my usual cup of tea and still make me love it. Debt Inheritance is the furthest thing from sunshine and roses. It's haunting, the characters are, to an extent, ghastly, and there is no redemption to be found in the hero, Jethro. He is cruel, unforgiving, and I really just wanted to punch him. I couldn't find one thing I liked about this guy on the surface. But again, with Pepper Winters... you just have to put faith in her to give you a story you'll end up loving. I've had it happen before. Her previous series made me feel the same why. Like I was going down a rabbit hole into somewhere scary as hell and uninviting. In the end, it won me over.
This author stick true to her dark erotic category. This book is nothing, but dark. I think underlying all the bad that happened she lad the ground work for Nila as a strong woman in Debt Inheritance. Here you have a young woman, taken away from everything she knows and loves. Basically, been brought to her death, with a torturous pre-show. Nila had every opportunity to break. She had her moments of weakness. The final moments solidified who she has become. When faced with the horror of her life, and the fate her mother and ancestors have had to face before her, she found her inner strength and beasted the real-life demons standing in front of her. Nila was what saved this story for me. Her and the story of her family that is untold has gripped me and I HAVE to know what is next.
The feelings I had after reading this book- rage and fury at Jethro, and pride in Nila. It's a romance though, right? Not in this book. It's really not. However, I will say this- I feel the more coming. There may be something we don't know yet, or there may be something that changes along the way. In either scenario, I know this book will probably end up doing a 180 to make certain aspects better, and possibly make others worse. I have no doubt it will be a uphill battle with Nila and Jethro. Can Jethro be redeemed enough? And can Nila outrun her terrifying future? I'll be waiting with bated breath to find out.
Please note- this story is not for everyone. It is incredibly dark, and not romantic in the slightest. However, if you enjoy a very engaging and intense story it is well worth the time. This is one of the very few books that I will recommend that isn't a romance right off the bat. You just have to be able to look through the darkness to see the wonderful bones that this story build for the upcoming books.
Pepper Winters wears many roles. Some of them include writer, reader, sometimes wife. She loves dark, taboo stories that twist with your head. The more tortured the hero, the better, and she constantly thinks up ways to break and fix her characters. Oh, and sex... her books have sex.
She loves to travel and has an amazing, fabulous hubby who puts up with her love affair with her book boyfriends.
Her Dark Erotica books include:
Tears of Tess (Monsters in the Dark #1)
Quintessentially Q (Monsters in the Dark #2)
